Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive on Mahé?
No, a valid national driving licence is legally sufficient for up to 3 months from entry, provided it is printed in the Latin alphabet. An IDP is only legally mandatory if your domestic licence uses a non-Latin script. However, some specific brands like Europcar require an IDP as part of their corporate terms.
Is an automatic or manual car better for Mahé?
An automatic vehicle is highly recommended. The steep mountain roads require constant, aggressive gear shifting in a manual car, which can be tiring and distracts from your focus on staying on the left side of the narrow roads.
Can I drive over the mountain passes in a standard small car?
Yes. Both the Sans Souci and La Misère passes are fully paved and perfectly manageable in a standard economy car. A 4x4 vehicle is not necessary, though you must drive cautiously due to sharp blind hairpins and narrow lanes.
What are the speed limits and how are they monitored?
Speed limits are 40 km/h in towns and residential villages, 65 km/h on open roads, and 80 km/h on the highway between Victoria and the airport. Police enforce these limits with random roadside checkpoints and mobile speed guns.
Where is the best place to refuel my rental car?
There are roughly six to eight SEYPEC stations on Mahé. Key stations are located near the airport, in Victoria, Beau Vallon, and Anse Royale. Remember that the west coast has no stations, so you must fill up before driving to western beaches.
How does street parking work in downtown Victoria?
Street parking in Victoria requires paper coupons bought from local shops or post offices for around SCR 5 per 30 minutes. You manually write or scratch the parking time on the coupon and place it on your dashboard. Alternatively, you can use paid parking lots or the Maison Collet multi-storey garage.
Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a car?
No, your national driving licence is valid for up to 3 months. An IDP is only legally required if your domestic licence is printed in a non-Latin script. However, certain international brands like Europcar require one due to company policy.
Where is the best place to pick up my rental vehicle?
Most tourists opt for a meet-and-greet service at Seychelles International Airport (SEZ) at Pointe Larue, which is located 10 km south of Victoria. Local operators will meet you directly at the arrivals barrier with no terminal counter delays.
Should I rent a manual or an automatic vehicle?
An automatic transmission is highly recommended for Mahé. The island features incredibly steep, narrow, and winding mountain passes where managing a manual clutch can be stressful for foreign drivers.
Can I take my rental car to Praslin or La Digue on the ferry?
No. The Cat Cocos fast ferry is for foot passengers only and does not carry vehicles. You must drop off your car at the Victoria jetty and arrange a separate rental on Praslin. La Digue is a car-free island where you will use bicycles.
How much security deposit is held on my credit card?
Airport counter desks typically block a CDW excess deposit of €1,000 to €2,500 on a physical credit card. Local independent firms offer much more flexible terms, often requiring a smaller cash deposit or zero deposit on booking.
When is the best time to book my car rental?
The island-wide vehicle fleet is very limited. You should book 3 to 6 months in advance if traveling during the December-January peak, and 2 to 3 months ahead for the July-August and Easter holiday seasons.
Which Mahé beach is easiest to reach by car?
Anse Royale on the southeast coast is the easiest. The main coast road runs right past it, it is about 20 minutes from Victoria and 15 from the airport, and parking is free. There is no access lane to negotiate and no entry fee.
Can a normal car handle the Anse Soleil lane?
It can, but the lane is a steep, narrow, single-lane chute, so drive carefully and use low gear (L or 1) in an automatic on the way down. Parking at the bottom fits only about five cars, so arrive before 09:00 or park up the hill and walk. If you would rather avoid it, neighboring Anse Takamaka has a flat approach and easier parking.
Can I drive to Anse Major?
No. There is no road to Anse Major. You can drive only to the Bel Ombre trailhead, where there are about five informal parking spaces, then either hike the 2.5 km coastal path (45 to 60 minutes) after paying the SCR 150 trail fee, or take a water taxi from Beau Vallon or Bel Ombre for around SCR 150 each way.
Is Anse Intendance safe for swimming?
Often not. Anse Intendance is a surf beach with powerful waves and rip currents, and red flags are frequently posted from June through September. Many people visit for the scenery rather than the water. For reliable swimming, choose a reef-protected beach like Anse Royale or a calm bay like Baie Lazare.
Do I pay a fee to park at the beaches?
Parking itself is free at the popular beaches like Anse Royale, Baie Lazare and Beau Vallon. The fees you may encounter are park entry charges, not parking charges: a combined SCR 200 fee covers Port Launay and Baie Ternay, and the Anse Major trail costs SCR 150 (card only). Avoid restaurant private lots at Anse Soleil, where paid-parking solicitation can be aggressive.
Which beach is best for families and snorkeling?
Anse Royale is the easy all-rounder for families thanks to its calm reef-protected water and roadside access. For the calmest snorkeling, Port Launay's deeply recessed bay is arguably the safest on the island, and Anse Soleil offers excellent snorkeling in the calm season from November through April.
Where do I park in Victoria?
Use the sports-stadium lot or the Maison Collet multi-storey, which gives a free first hour. Victoria is tiny, so park once and walk to the Clock Tower, market, temple, and gardens rather than driving between them.
Which cross-island road is more scenic?
The Sans Souci road through Morne Seychellois National Park gives the richer rainforest and mission-ruin views, while the La Misere road is quieter and opens onto Eden Island and Sainte Anne Marine Park. For a first drive, La Misere is the calmer choice.
Is the Tea Factory open on weekends?
No. The SeyTe Tea Factory runs tours Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 16:00 only and is closed on Saturday and Sunday. Plan the Sans Souci drive on a weekday if you want to include it.
Do I need cash or card for park fees?
SPGA park and trail fees are paid by card at on-site kiosks, and cash is not reliably accepted at the trail booths. At hilltop sites like Le Jardin du Roi the signal is weak, card terminals often fail, so carry cash there as a backup.
Can a normal car manage the steep Jardin du Roi lane?
Yes, a standard car handles it if you drive carefully. The lane is steep and narrow, so in an automatic select low gear, marked L or 1, to keep the engine braking on the climb and descent rather than riding the brakes.
What time of day is best for the mountain viewpoints?
Morning. The ridge above Sans Souci and Mission Lodge tends to cloud over by midday, so an early start gives the clearest west-coast views before the mist rolls in.
Is there a car rental desk inside the terminal?
Only Sixt operates a physical counter inside the arrivals hall to the left of customs. Local firms operate via a curbside meet-and-greet service where a representative tracks your flight and meets you at the exit with a name placard.
What if my flight lands after midnight?
If you land after midnight, you should pre-arrange your pickup with Okap (located directly across the road) or arrange for a taxi to your hotel and schedule free vehicle delivery to your resort the next morning.
Can I pick up my car at the airport and drop it off at the ferry?
Yes. Most local firms allow you to pick up your vehicle at Seychelles International Airport and drop it off at the Victoria Cat Cocos ferry jetty. Because the ferry is for foot passengers only, you must leave the vehicle on Mahé.
Do local car rental companies charge extra for late-night delivery?
No. Unlike international brands, local rental operators generally do not charge an out-of-hours surcharge. A representative will track your flight and meet you in the car park at no extra cost.
Is there a petrol station near the airport to refuel before returning?
Yes, there is a SEYPEC station right on the airport road, but it closes at 20:00. If you are catching a late-night or early-morning flight, plan your refueling ahead of time to comply with full-to-full fuel agreements.
Do I need a credit card to secure an airport rental?
If booking with a desk brand like Sixt, a physical credit card is required to freeze a security deposit of around €1,500. Local firms are much more flexible, often requiring very small or zero deposits and accepting cash payments.
