Victoria: Park Once and Walk the Capital

Victoria is one of the world's smallest capitals, so the smart move is to park once and explore on foot. Drop the car at the sports-stadium lot or the Maison Collet multi-storey, which gives you a free first hour, then walk to the silver Clock Tower known locally as Lorloz.

From there the main sights cluster within a few blocks. The Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market is busiest and freshest before 08:00, and it closes entirely on Sunday. If you want to combine the capital with a beach run afterward, plan your route with the help of our guide to Mahe beaches by car.

SightFeeHours
National Botanical Gardens, Mont Fleuri SCR 250 Daily 08:00-17:00, last entry 16:30
Selwyn-Clarke Market Free Mon-Fri 07:00-17:30, Sat 06:00-14:00, closed Sun
Vinayagar Hindu Temple, Quincy St Free 06:00-12:00 and 17:00-21:00

The Botanical Gardens hold Coco de Mer palms and Aldabra giant tortoises. At the Hindu temple, cover your shoulders and remove your shoes before entering.

The Sans Souci Mountain Road

The Sans Souci road climbs from Victoria over the spine of the island to Port Glaud, roughly 14 km that takes 25 to 30 minutes of driving plus time for photo stops. The ridge tends to cloud over by midday, so drive it in the morning while the west-coast views are still clear.

Stops along the climb

  • Mission Lodge at Venn's Town: a 19th-century mission ruin with a famous west-coast view, SCR 100, dedicated car park, open daily 09:00-17:00.
  • SeyTe Tea Factory: a SCR 25 tour open Mon-Fri 07:00-16:00 only, closed on weekends.
  • Copolia trailhead: SCR 100, card payment only at the kiosk.
  • Before you set off, review the road grades and rules in our Mahe driving guide.

Trail and park fees here are paid by card at on-site kiosks. Cash is not reliably accepted at the trail booths, so keep a working card handy.

The La Misere Viewpoint Drive

The La Misere road is the quieter cross-island route, running from Victoria toward Grand Anse over about 9 to 10 km in 20 to 25 minutes. Its highlight is the La Misere viewpoint, which has a proper surfaced parking bay beside the platform rather than a narrow verge.

  • Panorama over Eden Island marina and the islands of Sainte Anne Marine Park.
  • Surfaced parking bay, so you can stop without blocking the lane.
  • Far less traffic than the Sans Souci route, which makes it easier for first-time drivers.

If you only have time for one mountain crossing, this drive trades the dense rainforest of Sans Souci for an open coastal view and a calmer road. You can compare the two routes side by side and then compare rental cars to find one that suits the gradients.

South-Coast Heritage: Rum and Spice

The southeast coast pairs two heritage stops that a rental car links in a single afternoon. The Takamaka Rum Distillery sits at La Plaine St Andre in Au Cap, a restored 1792 estate with a free guided tour of about 45 minutes, a dedicated free car park, and its own resident Aldabra tortoises.

StopPriceHours
Takamaka Rum Distillery, Au Cap Free tour Mon-Fri and usually Sat 10:30-16:30, closed Sun
Le Jardin du Roi spice garden 8 euros Daily 10:00-17:30

Le Jardin du Roi sits in the hills above Anse Royale and is reached up a steep, narrow lane. In an automatic, use low gear, marked L or 1, to keep control on the climb. Cell signal is weak at the top, so the card terminals often fail and you should carry cash.

Both stops have free, dedicated parking, so you never have to leave the car on the public road while you tour the estate or the garden.

Sauzier Waterfall and the North Coast

Sauzier Waterfall in Port Glaud is a short, easy stop, about a 5-minute walk from the paid car park. Tickets are SCR 50 for adults and SCR 25 for children, with the booth open Mon-Fri 09:00-16:00 and weekends 09:30-16:00.

Ignore anyone in the village below the church who claims the official entrance is expensive and offers an unofficial jungle route. That is a known scam. Walk past them to the official ticket booth and pay there.

To finish, drive the Glacis and North Point coastal road north of Beau Vallon. It is a purely scenic stretch with informal pull-offs and granite-cove views, narrowing to near single-track at the tip. To combine the waterfall with swimming stops, see our route to the best Mahe beaches.

  • Sauzier Waterfall: SCR 50 adult, SCR 25 child, 5-minute walk from the car park.
  • Glacis and North Point: informal pull-offs, granite coves, single-track at the very tip.
  • Park sensibly at the pull-offs since the road has little room to pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I park in Victoria?
Use the sports-stadium lot or the Maison Collet multi-storey, which gives a free first hour. Victoria is tiny, so park once and walk to the Clock Tower, market, temple, and gardens rather than driving between them.
Which cross-island road is more scenic?
The Sans Souci road through Morne Seychellois National Park gives the richer rainforest and mission-ruin views, while the La Misere road is quieter and opens onto Eden Island and Sainte Anne Marine Park. For a first drive, La Misere is the calmer choice.
Is the Tea Factory open on weekends?
No. The SeyTe Tea Factory runs tours Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 16:00 only and is closed on Saturday and Sunday. Plan the Sans Souci drive on a weekday if you want to include it.
Do I need cash or card for park fees?
SPGA park and trail fees are paid by card at on-site kiosks, and cash is not reliably accepted at the trail booths. At hilltop sites like Le Jardin du Roi the signal is weak, card terminals often fail, so carry cash there as a backup.
Can a normal car manage the steep Jardin du Roi lane?
Yes, a standard car handles it if you drive carefully. The lane is steep and narrow, so in an automatic select low gear, marked L or 1, to keep the engine braking on the climb and descent rather than riding the brakes.
What time of day is best for the mountain viewpoints?
Morning. The ridge above Sans Souci and Mission Lodge tends to cloud over by midday, so an early start gives the clearest west-coast views before the mist rolls in.
